Normandy

La Normandie

Men from the north (North-man) went up the Seine river and settled in the region in the 10th century. Rollo the invader was given a Ducthy byThe King of France granted  in exchange for his vassalage. The Normans influence extended to the west. The old borders of normandy have remained pretty much the same since then.

In 1066, the Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror invaded England  at the battle of Hastings and became king of Englang. England was French for 80-years!

At the same time the Normans invaded the Kingdom of Antioch and southern Italy and Sicily. Their strategy was assimilation. Therefore in the 13th century there is no longer « Normans »-strictly speaking- with their specificities. Being Normand remains more as a identity than a reality. 
Normandy became british in 1144 with the Plantagenets.

 Philippe Auguste takes Normandy back in 1204 making it French again. 

It goes back as to England in 1346 during the 100 years war and the invasion of  France by Edward III of England.
This back and forth exchange is completed in 1469. With the end of the conflict, Normandy is definitely French.

Normandy was 3 times British and 4 times French. It is a land of conflict and encounter between these two Peoples. It has developped it own identity. An identity that is full of British influence and not quite French

The strong bounds between France and England manifested again in June 1944 with the Allied landing, strongly affecting the region.

Au 10 ème siècle, les hommes du nord (North-man) remontent la Seine et s’établissent dans la région. Le Roi de France accorde le duché de Rouen à Rollon en échange de sa vassalité. Très rapidement l’emprise des Normands s’étend vers l’Ouest et acquiert à peu près les frontières de l’actuelle Normandie. En 1066, le duc de Normandie, Guillaume le conquérant envahit l’Angleterre et en devient roi, ce qui rend l’Angleterre Française pendant 80 ans!

Les Normands envahissent concomitamment le sud de l’Italie et la Sicile et le royaume d’Antioche. La stratégie des Normands est celle de l’assimilation. Aussi dès le 13ème siècle il n’y a plus à proprement parler de Normands avec leurs spécificités, il reste plutôt une identité qui ne cesse de s’estomper au cours des siècles suivants. 

La Normandie devient Anglaise avec l’arrivée des Plantagenets en 1144.
Elle redevient Francaise avec Philippe Auguste en 1204.
Elle retourne au royaume d’Angleterre en 1346 pendant la guerre de 100 ans et avec l’invasion de Edouard III d’Angleterre.
Cet échange s’achève en 1469, la Normandie devient définitivement Française avec la fin de ce conflit.

La Normandie a été 4 fois Francaise et 3 fois Anglaise. C’est une terre de rencontre et de conflits entre ces deux peuples tant et si bien qu’elle a dévellopé une identité, à cheval entre l’influence Francaise et l’influence Anglaise, sur les traces de la présence Normande.
La manifestation de ce trait-d’union entre la France et l’Angleterre s’est manifesté de nouveau en Juin 1944 avec le débarquement Allié, marquant durablement la région.
